BAY AREA SPORTS ORGANIZING COMMITTEE JOINS SAN FRANCISCO 2016
The Silver Medal in 2012 and the Gold Medal in 2016

SAN FRANCISCO, July 26, 2006 —Following the USOC's selection of San Francisco as one of the three cities to advance in the 2016 bid process, the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee (BASOC) announces its role as the first partner organization supporting the effort to bid for the San Francisco 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Anne Cribbs, President and CEO of BASOC says, "BASOC's mission for the past twenty years has been to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to the San Francisco Bay Area. We are excited to support the San Francisco 2016 bid and the region's campaign being led by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. We look forward to using our collective knowledge in support of the current bid and its effort to celebrate and reflect the values of the Olympics."

During the four year bid process for 2012, BASOC created a network of community leaders, officials, Olympians and Paralympians and sports experts in the areas of regional planning, venue design and use, environment, technology, security, transportation, accommodation, marketing and finance. This body of committed individuals and organizations lent their support to the 2012 campaign and are enthusiastically in support of the bid to host the Games in 2016.

Scott Givens, Managing Director of San Francisco 2016 explains, "Since the start of the campaign, San Francisco 2016 has had the support of BASOC. Their effort in 2012 laid a strong technical foundation that has informed the work on 2016. Today's announcement brings us together in mission. We look forward to their continued engagement as we move into the next phase of the competition to host the Games of the XXXI Olympiad."

Established in 1987, BASOC works with the Northern California community to bring and support regional, national and international events to the San Francisco Bay Area and encouraging the creation and development of new venues for sport. With more than 550 Olympians and Paralympians living, working and training in the San Francisco Bay area, BASOC works to share the ideals and values of Olympism with youth, while continuing to pursue the ultimate goal of hosting the Olympic Games.

The San Francisco 2016 Bid Committee has been incorporated as a sole-purpose non-profit corporation in the State of California. It is chartered to bid for the opportunity to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
