Northern California Olympians and Paralympians celebrating Olympic Day with Activities Around the Bay Area

Events are part of 2,000+ nationwide events celebrating the birth of the modern Olympic Games

SAN FRANCISCO - CALIFORNIA – The spirit of the Olympic Movement will roll into the San Francisco Bay Area as members of the Northern California Olympians and Paralympians (NCOPA) and the San Francisco Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee (BASOC) join together to host and support the annual celebration of Olympic Day. The activities are scheduled during the month of June and include a fencing clinic, a wheelchair basketball clinic, a baseball game, gymnastics and field hockey clinic and BMX Cycling exhibitions.

Anne Warner Cribbs, BASOC CEO and 1960 Olympian explains, 'We are excited to take part in Olympic Day and inspire kids in the San Francisco Bay Area to dream about participating in the Olympic Games. The Olympic spirit is alive an well in the San Francisco Bay Area and BASOC is proud to support the Olympic Movement and encourage children to lead healthy, active lives.'

These activities are part of more than 2,000 events taking place nationwide during the month of June. The events, designed to engage youth and promote the ideals of the Olympic movement, feature athlete appearances, family-friendly activities and interactive learning experiences.

Greg Massialas, President of the Northern California Olympians, three-time Olympian and current Olympic fencing coach, adds, 'Northern California is home to over 450 Olympians and Paralympians from past and current teams. We are delighted to share our pride and love of the Olympic Games with future generations! We are especially pleased to recognize the many Olympians and Paralympians who are training at the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University and other academic institutions in the San Francisco Bay Area.'

Around the world, more than 160 countries take part in the annual celebration. Olympic Day, June 23, created in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games, focuses on the Olympic values and ideals such as fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship. In the U.S., Olympic Day events range from small gatherings to large, citywide events.
