Open Letter to the Bay Area:
Two years ago, after the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee
(BASOC) received a "Silver Medal" in its bid for the 2012
Summer Olympic Games, we believed that it was important to
continue our volunteer effort to attract major sporting events
to the San Francisco Bay Area. Bringing the Olympic Games
to the Bay Area remains our long-term goal, and a stepping-stone
to that objective is to demonstrate to the Olympic community
our ability to successfully host national and international
sporting events.
We are proud that the National Senior Games Association (NSGA)
has selected the San Francisco Bay Area to host the 2009 Senior
Olympics. The Senior Olympics is one of the largest recurring
multi-sports events in the United States and the largest multi-sports
event in the world for seniors. Approximately 15,000 top male
and female senior athletes, age 50 and older, from across
the United States are projected to compete in 18 different
sports at venues located throughout the Bay Area. The 15-day
event is set for August 1-15, 2009. We anticipate that the
Senior Olympics will provide a significant boost to the Bay
Area economy during this period, and will demonstrate to the
USOC that the Bay Area is the best place for athletes.
The 2006 FINA Masters World Championships will be held at
Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center. This event, with participants
from water polo, swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and
open water, attracts 10,000 competitors, from more than 60
countries, ages 25 and older. BASOC was instrumental in convincing
United States Masters Swimming to underwrite the costs and
bring the event to the Bay Area.
BASOC is also a finalist for the 2007 Junior World Table
Tennis Championships. We should know the decision by the end
of the first quarter of 2005. This event would be a major
attraction for our neighbors on the Pacific Rim and an opportunity
to showcase the Bay Area's diversity.
We continue our efforts to bring USA Rugby to the Bay Area.
The decision to relocate its headquarters from Colorado Springs
has been postponed until a year from now.
BASOC has also had preliminary discussions with USA Track
and Field regarding becoming the United States Bid City for
the World Games in 2011. This international event, held every
four years, is the largest track and field only event and
has never been hosted by the U.S.
Needless to say, BASOC has elevated the national and international
awareness of the San Francisco Bay Area among the sporting
community. But to continue on our quest to ultimately win
an Olympics Game bid, we need your help. We need our individual
and corporate friends to provide financial assistance to further
our goals.
BASOC is a membership - based organization. We ask that individuals
contribute $100 annually and business members contribute $1,000
annually. BASOC, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization,
will use the membership funds to pursue and support sporting
events so that one day, hopefully in the near future, the
San Francisco Bay Area will proudly play host to an Olympic
Summer Games.
Please complete the attached Membership Form and forward
it with your check to BASOC at the address listed below. Thank
you for your support and we welcome your participation.
Sincerely,
Anne W. Cribbs
President and CEO
