National, Regional & Bid City Characteristics

Overview
The San Francisco Bay Area is among the world's greatest economies, driven by the knowledge-based industries of the future, world class research facilities, innovative technology companies and a skilled and highly educated workforce. The San Francisco Bay Area is proud of its past and ongoing economic successes, its outstanding quality of life and its diversity of cultures. The region is positioned to maintain its economic and cultural leadership in the nation and in the world well into the future.

The San Francisco Bay Area's nine county region is among the most culturally and ethnically diverse places in the country and in the world. The region's political environment is vibrant, civil and stable. The bid city of San Francisco and the bid's other anchor cities – San Jose, Oakland and the state capital of Sacramento – are financially solid and actively involved in the bid planning process, and the local eco nomies are thriving. The regional planning structures that support and manage growth in the Bay Area bring a steady and consistent vision to ensure the region's quality of life and meet infrastructure needs, including improved transportation networks, environmental protection and affordable housing.

The San Francisco Bay Area will gain substantially from hosting the 2012 Olympic Games. The development and augmentation of new and existing athletic venues, transportation improvements stimulated by the Olympic Games, investments in youth programs, a 21st Century housing community, exemplary environmental planning and the direct exposure of our citizens to the Olympic ideals are all inherent rewards in being chosen as the Host City for the 2012 Olympic Games. Our true goal, however, is to deliver our vision of the Olympic experience to the athletes, to our residents and to people around the world. We aspire to celebrate communitas, the Latin word for the concept of the global village, uniting many voices on one stage, in one spirit.

What Kind of Support Exists in the Region to Host the 2012 Olympic Games?
Support for hosting the 2012 Olympic Games is broad and deep throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Hundreds of elected officials, local leaders and organizations have endorsed the bid and key strategic partners like the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) are actively involved in bid development and planning.

Moreover, the public overwhelmingly supports bringing the Olympic Games to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2012. A survey of Bay Area residents conducted by San Francisco-based Corey, Canapary & Galanis in Fall 2000 for BASOC showed that 70% of those surveyed have significant interest in the Olympic Games and 84% are enthusiastic about bringing the 2012 Olympic Games to their hometown.

What makes this a regional bid?
Venues and events will be staged throughout the region, from sailing in San Francisco Bay, baseball in Pacific Bell Park and football (soccer) in Oakland to mountain biking in Napa, equestrian in Monterey, gymnastics in San Jose, track and field at Stanford and rowing in Sacramento.

We're working closely with leaders from the bid city, San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland and Sacramento. Only a truly regional bid will provide the best conditions for athletes, the best experience for residents and spectators and the best opportunity to win the 2012 Olympic Games for the San Francisco Bay Area.

Why do you believe the San Francisco Bay Area is the best place in the U.S. and the world to host the 2012 Olympic Games?
Our innovative, entrepreneurial and educated workforce is transforming economies at home and around the world. Our region's outstanding climate, natural beauty and athletic venues will provide the best conditions for athletes, spectators and members of the media. We have world-class hotels, restaurants and infrastructures in transportation, technology and health care. Our prosperous, progressive, tolerant citizens comprise a region that has one of the richest diversity of people and culture of any area in the world. We believe that here, at the beginning of the 21st century, the San Francisco Bay Area best represents the Olympic ideals and the spirit of communitas.
