Overview
The San Francisco Bay Area is the fifth-largest metropolitan market in the United States. With a population of over 8 million, 3.7 million jobs and an annual economy of $200 billion, the San Francisco Bay Area ranks as the world's 21st-largest economy, just behind Sweden and ahead of Austria.

San Francisco continues to lead the nation in venture capital investments and patented exports, particularly those arising out of Silicon Valley-the birthplace of the New Economy. This region is a hotbed for scientific and technological advancement that spawns the highest percentage of fastest-growing small business in the country.

Seventy airlines serve the International Airport, the eighth busiest airport in the world, where a $2.4 billion expansion was recently completed to better serve the 16.5 million international visitors that the region draws in tourism alone each year.

What corporations are headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area that we might expect to get involved in the Olympic Games?

The Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee (BASOC) brought together a group of business and industry marketing leaders to share their expertise on the marketing opportunities present in the Bay Area for the Olympic Games. This group put together a list of the top 100 Public Companies and a list of the top 50 Private Companies types of business/products they provide and their headquarters locations. These companies could be identified as potential suppliers and sponsors of the 2012 Olympic Games.

What type of tickets to the 2012 Olympic Games will be available to be sold, average prices and expected Revenues?

  • BASOC conservatively projects that more than $490 million in net revenues will be generated by ticket sales for the 2012 Olympic Games.
  • Ten million tickets will be available for sale
  • Ticket prices begin as low of $10 to a high of $400, excluding the opening and closing ceremonies with the average ticket price estimated at $56.

What about Control of Outdoor Advertising?
BASOC is working with three media companies that provide the majority of outdoor advertising in the San Francisco Bay Area, including billboards and transit. BASOC wil work with these companies to ensure that the Olympic Games in the San Francisco Bay Area comply with the standards of the International Olympic Committee and minimize the intrusion of commercialism.

What are the projected revenues and expenses budgeted for funding our Bid City efforts?

BASOC projects operating budgets of $1.8 million in 2001 and 2002 with $2 million to $3 million in in-kin contributions.
To fund our bid city activities, BASOC has launched a fundraising program that will include a variety of traditional methods and sources. They include special events, charitable gifts, and in-kind donations, from local corporations, foundations and individuals.
