Customs & Immigration

Overview
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has been designated as the official arrivals facility for the 2012 Olympic Games for the purposes of this bid. The new International Terminal at SFO features state-of-the-art security systems and greater capacity for normal, everyday operations in customs and immigration than the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport had at the peak of the operations for the 1996 Olympic Games.

Theme Team
BASOC worked closely with Rick Eaton of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and Robert S. Stiriti of the U.S. Customs Service to ensure that all matters related to customs and immigration for the 2012 Olympic Games were considered and addressed.

How will the region handle the significantly increased Customs and Immigration responsibilities associated with the Games?
During the peak months of July and August of 1996, Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport was staffed with 105 inspectors at 84 primary inspection stations. San Francisco International Airport's new $1 billion international terminal will have 175 inspectors at nearly 100 inspection stations within the next year.

Additionally, as with past national special security events, Customs and Immigration services expect to dispatch additional officers to the region to support the increased security and customs necessary for the Olympic Games.
